Summary
The early 1930s were the heyday years of the early sound musical films and Warner Brothers was at the forefront of this movement with the genius of Busby Berkeley, and three hit films in this year alone: 42nd Street, Gold Diggers of 1933, and Footlight Parade. This gorgeous and energetic classic boasts a line-up of talent that includes Joan Blondell, Ruby Keeler, Dick Powell, and James Cagney. Cagney must put on a series of "prologues" in order to raise money for his next show. The chaotic rehearsals, sabotage, and back stage dramas culminate in one sensational climax featuring the unforgettable Harry Warren and Al Dubin hit numbers "By a Waterfall", "Honeymoon Hotel", and "Shanghai Lil." Blondell, who had worked with Cagney in five previous films, is terrific as his wise-cracking His-Girl-Friday, with character actors Frank McHugh, Guy Kibbee, and Hugh Herbert adding to the fun.
