Summary
Warner Brothers pulled out all the top guns for this hard-hitting crime drama with studio stars James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, George Bancroft, and genius director Michael Curtiz. Growing up on the mean streets of New York, Rocky Sullivan (Cagney) is incarcerated early on for petty crimes and chooses the life of a gangster, becoming something of a local hero to the next generation of hoodlums, played here by the Dead End Kids – Leo Gorcey, Billy Halop, and Huntz Hall. From his classic line "Whadda ya hear, whadda ya say?" to his final scene of panicked crying as he is led to the electric chair, Cagney is simply riveting and deservedly earned his first Academy Award nomination for his performance. Pat O'Brien stars as Rocky's childhood friend who grows up to be a priest, tasked with saving the boys from the temptation of crime, and Ann Sheridan is the local girl-next-door. The film was an instant success, helping the careers of all involved.
